The Myrobalans (Triphala)
Triphala literally means three fruits. Triphala or myrobalans is a blend of the dried fruits of Terminalia chebula (haritaki), Terminalia belerica (baheda), and Emblica officinalis (amla) in equal proportions . Terminalia chebula (haritaki), Terminalia belerica (baheda) have a hot potency, while Amla is of cool potency. Triphala, as a result is balanced, making it useful as an internal cleansing agent, detoxifying formulation for everyone as well as for more thin-skinned type people and vegetarians.
Triphala formula and its constituents are highly appreciated in Ayurvedic system of medicine, being aiding digestion, nutrient absorption and also enhancing body metabolism.
As per Ayurvedic physicians, daily consumption of triphala leads to normalizing appetite, improves digestion, increases RBC (red blood cells) and hemoglobin, and removes of unwanted fat. Triphala is very effective in creating an appropriate environment for the propagation of beneficial bacteria present in intestines and unfavorable conditions for non-beneficial bacteria. The most important use of Triphala is as a bowel controller. It is considered safest and is compared with food and is non habit forming, even when it is taken every day. As Triphala is considered as a body tonic, cleanser and blood purifier, there is other important use that it provides strength to the eyes, beneficial for cataracts, and other eyes ailments like conjunctivitis and glaucoma. Triphala is also used for washing eyes everyday to increase vision, neutralize many eye defects and get rid of redness and soreness of eyes.
