In other contexts, if a type of dhatu or a tissue forgets its association to nature's intelligence, or is in some way spoiled, Triphala can mend that damage before it gets converted into a grave disease. This could have implications for hostility the growth of cancer or other aberrant cells.

Another research (Phytomedicine 2002) depicted that Triphala had a radio-protective outcome in mice exposed to gamma-radiation. It deferred the onset of mortality and abridged the symptoms of radiation sickness in one group appreciably more than the control group, which did not took Triphala or trifla. This shows the aptitude of Triphala to act as a radiation-protective agent when administered in the proper doses.

An other experiment, the effect of the 3 fruits i.e. Amalaki, Haritaki and Bhibitaki used in Triphala on cholesterol-induced hyper-cholesterolaemia and atherosclerosis. Even though all 3 fruits used in the Triphala or trifla formulations were effective in reducing serum cholesterol and cholesterol of both the liver and aorta, Haritaki, one of the ingredient of Triphala showed the greatest prospects.

Triphala and its hidden benefits

Question – I am a diabetic patient, is Triphala safe for me......read more

Triphala as a misconception to many is not an herb. It is a mixture of three herbs and this is the reason it has got its name (Triphala – “tri” means three and “phala” means fruit). Triphala is composed of mixture of three herbs i.e. Amalaki ( Emblica officinalis), Haritaki ( Terminalia chebula) and bhibhitaki ( Terminalia bellirica.). It is not much known to many but only the fruit of these three herbs are used and more importantly the seeds of these seeds should also be removed. These seedless fruits are then dried in the shades to expel all the moisture from it. When a dried form of these fruits is achieved then these are pulverized and stored in the air tight container.

Most of the people don’t know the real method of preparation of Triphala. If the seeds are pulverized in the mixture the real effect of Triphala is counteracted and only a partial effect is achieved. Hence the real Triphala is the one which does not have the seeds crushed in it.

Now coming to the more elaborative part of Triphala I must explain you the real course of action of the individual herbs that are the ingredients of Triphala.

First comes the Amalaki

Amalaki is commonly known as Amlain Hindi. World wide it is known as Indian goose berry and botanically it is known as Emblica officinalis. It is a medium height tree and is very easily seen throughout Indian subcontinent. Amalaki belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family as per modern botany is considered and errand kul as per ayurvedic classification. Amalaki is a deciduous medium height tree that has soft, greenish grey, exfoliating bark. The leaves of Amalaki are some what fluffy with tiny oblong, pinnately set leaflets on them. The fruits of Amalaki are about ½ to 1 inch in diameter and are pulpy. When it is raw it is of green color which slowly a change to greenish yellow as per the fruit matures. More over the fruits are depressed, globose, fleshy or pulpy and vaguely 6-lobed, containing 6 trigonous seeds i.e. seed with three edges.

In ayurvedic classification it has 2 types i.e. vanya i.e. wild variety and gramya i.e. cultivated one. Vanya Amlai.e. the wild variety of Amalaki is considered better as per medicinal values are concerned.

Amalaki is an herb that has miraculous activities. It is considered as on in all remedy for many diseases.

The pharmacology of Amalaki

Aqueous extracts of Amalaki fruit and ascorbic acid equivalent to that in the fruit extract were supplied to albino mice for seven successive days, followed by injection of Pb(NO3)2 or Al2(SO4)3.18H2O. The aptitude of the crude fruit extract and ascorbic acid to cancel out the toxic effects tempted by these metal salts in hepatic and kidney tissues of the animals was considered. Histo-pathological explanation exposed that both the fruit extract and ascorbic acid could averted the toxic effects induced by both metals, but the extract was more effectual than ascorbic acid unaided. Feeding of Amlalaki to the hyper-cholesterolemic rabbits for 3 months showed a two pronged effect, its feeding augmented the lipid mobilization and catabolism and held back the authentication of lipids in the extra liver tissues. Feeding of Amalaki at first raised the plasma lipids and cholesterol levels but by the end of 3 months, their levels were condensed considerably below the levels in the control group. Lipid levels in the liver were also appreciably decreased. Though lipid levels in the aorta augmented during this period the raise was much less in Amalaki fed animals as compared to the control group. The degree of atherosclerosis at the end of 3 months of Amlafeeding was much minor when compared to the control group.

The relative effects of a crude aqueous extract from the fruit and a corresponding amount of synthetic ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in dropping the clastogenic act of cesium chloride (CsCl) in vivo on mice bone marrow cells were compared. CsCl-induced chromosomal deviation were experiential in the mice 1 day after exposure in frequencies that were directly proportional to the dose administered even after treatment for seven days. On the other hand, oral management of either ascorbic acid or Amalaki extract for 7 days before exposure to CsCl for 1 day condensed the occurrence of chromosomal aberrations. This protective action of orally-administered Amalaki extract against damage induced by CsCl has been reported to be of considerable significance in view of the possible entry of Cs. into edible plants from soil and then into the food chain following radioactive fallout.

Amalaki juice was managed at a dose of 5ml/kg body weight per rabbit per day for 2 months. Serum cholesterol, TG, phospholipids and LDL levels were decreased by 80 %, 65 %, 75 % and 92 %, respectively. Likewise, the tissue lipid levels showed a noteworthy reduction following Amalaki juice management. Aortic plaques were regressed. Amalaki juice treated rabbits excreted more cholesterol and phospholipids, suggesting that the mode of absorption was affected. Amalaki juice is an effectual hypolipidemic agent and can be used as a pharmaceutical tool in hyper-lipidaemic subjects. ”

Some Studies and researches on Triphala

The Ayurvedic herbs Haritaki, Amalaki and Bhibitaki (Triphala) decrease cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits.

Int-J-Cardiol. 1988 Nov; 21(2): 167-75

4 groups of twenty five rabbits were created and each were studied to conclude the effect of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and Baheda (Terminalia Billerica) on cholesterol-induced hyper-cholesteolaemia and atherosclerosis. The control group was fed with cholesterol alone

The Haritaki group received Haritaki and cholesterol

The Baheda group received Baheda and cholesterol

Amalaki group received Amlaand cholesterol for 4 months.

Cholesterolaemia was considerably less (P less than 0.001) in the Haritaki group (166 mg/dl), the Baheda group (240 mg/dl) and the Amalaki group (205 mg/dl) than in the controlled group (630 mg/dl). The Haritaki group had appreciably low cholesterolaemia (P less than 0.001) as compared to the Baheda and Amalaki groups. Aortic sudanophilia was considerably fewer (P less than 0.001) in the Haritaki group (6%), the Baheda group (16%), and the Amalaki group (12%) than in the controlled group (38%). The cholesterol contents of the liver and aorta, correspondingly, were appreciably low in the Haritaki group (46 mg/100 g, 28 mg/100 g), the Baheda group (78 mg/100 g, 72 mg/100 g) and the Amalaki group (46 mg/100 g, 42 mg/100 g), than in the controlled group (604 mg/100 g, 116 mg/100 g). Among the drug-fed groups, the Haritaki group had considerably lower degrees of sudanophilia and cholesterol content of aorta and liver (P less than 0.001) as compared to the Baheda and Amalaki groups. Although all three drugs decreased serum cholesterol, aortic sudanophilia and cholesterol contents of liver and aorta, their property were in rising order of magnitude. The drugs did not affected serum triglyceride levels, euglobulin clot lysis time or platelet adhesiveness.

Potential of Triphala, an ayurvedic herbal formulation as a novel anti-cancerous drug.

Cancer-Lett. 2006 Jan 18; 231(2): 206-14

The cyto-toxic properties of aqueous extract of Triphala or trifla, an ancient ayurvedic formulation, were put under examination on human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and a transplantable mouse thymic lymphoma (barcl-95). The feasibility of treated cells was found to reduce with the rising concentrations of Triphala. On the other hand, action of normal breast epithelial cells, MCF-10 F, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, mouse liver and spleen cells, with alike concentrations of Triphala did not influence their cyto-toxicity considerably. The drug treatment was established to induce apoptosis in MCF-7 and barcl-95 cells in vitro as resoluted by annexin-V fluorescence and quantity of apoptotic cells was found needy on Triphala or trifla concentration. MCF-7 cells treated with Triphala or trifla when subjected to single cell gel electrophoresis, revealed a pattern of DNA damage, trait of apoptosis. Researches on Triphala treated MCF-7 and barcl-95 cells demonstrated noteworthy augment in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a concentration dependent way. ROS raise was, though, found to be unimportant in MCF-10 F as well as in murine spleen and liver standard cells. In vivo, direct oral feeding of Triphala to mice (40 mg/kg body weight) transplanted with barcl-95 shaped important decrease in tumor growth as evaluated by tumor volume dimension. It was also found that apoptosis was considerably advanced in the excised tumor tissue of Triphala fed mice in contrast to the controlled group, suggesting the participation of apoptosis in tumor growth decrease. These results suggested that Triphala possessed aptitude to induce cyto-toxicity in tumor cells but secure the normal cells. The degree of difference of effects of Triphala on normal and tumor cells seems to be connected to its ability to evoke differential reaction in intracellular ROS generation. The degree of difference of response of normal and tumor cells to Triphala in vitro and the substantial weakening of transplanted tumor in mice fed with Triphala points to its possible use as an anti-cancer drug for clinical treatment.

In vitro antioxidant investigation and free radical reactions of Triphala and its ingredients.

Phytother-Res. 2005 Jul; 19(7): 582-6

The aqueous extract of the fruits of Emblica officinalis i.e. Amalaki (T1), Terminalia chebula i.e. Haritaki (T2) and Terminalia Billerica i.e. Bhibitaki (T3) and their equal mixture Triphala were assessed for their in vitro antioxidant activity. Gamma-Radiation induced strand break formation in plasmid DNA (pBR322) was efficiently reserved by Triphala and its constituents in the attentiveness range 25-200 microg/mL with a % reticence of T1 (30%-83%), T2 (21%-71%), T3 (8%-58%) and Triphala (17%-63%). They also repressed radiation induced lipid per-oxidation in rat liver microsomes effectively with IC (50) values lower than 15 microg/mL. The extracts were found to have the ability to attack on free radicals such as DPPH and super-oxide. As the phenolic compounds present in these extracts are mostly accountable for their radical inhibiting activities, the total phenolic contents present in these extracts were resolute and expressed in terms of gallic acid equivalents and were established to vary from 33 percent to 44 percent. These researches exposed that all three ingredients of Triphala are active and they show slightly different activities under different circumstances. T1 shows greater competence in lipid per-oxidation and plasmid DNA assay, while T2 has greater radical scavenging activity. Thus their equal proportional mixture i.e. Triphala, is predictable to be more competent due to the mutual activity of the individual parts.

Immuno-modulatory activities of Triphala on neutrophil functioning.

Biol-Pharm-Bull. 2005 Aug; 28(8): 1398-403

Immune activation is an effectual as well as defensive approach against rising infectious diseases. The immuno-modulatory behavior of Triphala (Terminalia chebula: Haritaki, Terminalia belerica: Bhibitaki and Emblica officinalis: Amalaki) were reviewed by testing the a variety of neutrophil functions like adherence, phagocytosis (phagocytic index (P.I) and avidity index (A.I)) and nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) decrease in albino rats. In latest years much notice is being listening carefully on the immunological changes occur during stress. Noise (100 dB) stress for 4 h/d for 15 d, was engaged to alter the neutrophil purpose. The neutrophil function tests and corticosterone levels were approved out in 8 different groups of animals, namely controlled; Triphala, noise-stress, Triphala noise-stress, and matching immunized groups were used. Sheep RBC (SRBC 5 x 10(9) cells per ml) were used for immunizing the animals that fit in to immunized groups. In Triphala management (1 g/kg/d for 48 d), A.I was found to be considerably improved in the Triphala group, while the residual neutrophil functions and steroid levels were not distorted considerably. Though the neutrophil functions were considerably improved in the Triphala immunized group with a noteworthy reduction in corti-costerone level was seen. On contact to the noise-stress, the neutrophil functions were considerably concealed and followed by an important raise in the corticosterone levels were seen in both the noise-stress and the noise-stress immunized groups. These noise-stress-induced changes were appreciably prohibited by Triphala management in both the Triphala noise-stress and the Triphala noise-stress immunized groups. Hence our investigation has divulged that oral management of Triphala appears to rouse the neutrophil gathering in the immunized rats and stress induced repression in the neutrophil functions were considerably prohibited by Triphala.

Triphala, an herbal formulation based on ayurveda works as rasayana, protects mice against radiation-induced lethality by free-radical inhibition.

J-Altern-Complement-Med. 2004 Dec; 10(6): 971-8

The action of ten mg/kg of Triphala extract (TE) was experimented on radiation-induced illness and death in mice uncovered to seven to twelve Gray (Gy) of gamma-irradiation. Treatment of mice with Triphala once a day for five successive days prior to irradiation belated the onset of mortality and decreased the symptoms of radiation sickness when contrasted with the non-drug double distilled water treated irradiated controls (DDW). Triphala offered defense against both gastro-intestinal and haemopoetic fatality. Though, animals of both the TE + irradiation and DDW + irradiation groups did not stay alive up to thirty days post-irradiation beyond eleven Gy irradiation. The LD50/30 was established to be 8.6 Gy for the DDW + irradiation group and 9.9 Gy for TE + irradiation group. The management of Triphala resulted in an augmentation in the radiation tolerance by 1.4 Gy, and the dose decrease factor was found to be 1.15. To understand the action of Triphala, the free radical scavenging activity of the drug was assessed. Triphala was found to react (.)OH, O (2) (.) 2, 2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate) diammonium salt (ABTS) (.+) and NO(.) radicals in a dose dependent manner.
