Home remedies to increase breast feeding supply
As a mother, a lady may get worried when her child is crying for milk but she has very less supply of breast feed. Naturally, she would try to find out various methods to increase the availability of milk so that the baby can get sufficient milk to fulfill the bodily requirements. Following ways can help her increase the supply of breast milk easily.
Repeated feeding helps in increasing supply of milk
Frequent feeding of baby will help in boosting the supply of breast milk. Favored rate of recurrence is every 3 to 4 hrs at night & every 2 hours during the day. Feeding process will stimulate the breast and ultimately more amount of milk will be produced. However, try to nurse on both sides as long as the baby is comfortable.
Use top quality electric pump
A lady can also use electric pump that is especially available for this purpose. This pump helps in increasing the production of a hormone named Prolactin, which stimulates the production of more milk.
Pumping duration should be minimum 10 to 15 minutes. Pumping is less recommended method than feeding. However, when the baby does not feed directly due to non-availability of milk or any other reason, this method can be used.
Avoid giving supplements to child and encourage sucking
A woman should encourage her kid to keep sucking the breasts so that milk supply gets stimulated. Supplements like water, juice, or solid food should not be given to child as the baby will not feed after having these supplements.
This will result in lesser production of milk. Instead, women should eat calcium and protein rich food stuffs along with increased quantity of water.
Increase the period of rest
When mother takes rest along with her baby for a longer period of time, this close proximity will make the child want to feed more. It will excite better milk production.
Take fenugreek herb
Supply of breast milk can also be increased by consuming fenugreek. It is a type of herb that acts as an exceptional medium when taken in addition to feeding and pumping.
Notable outcomes are noticed after taking it for 2 to 3 days; dosage can be 2 to 3 capsules thrice in a day. During the use of this herb, one can find the smell of maple syrup from perspiration and urine. However, one should not worry as these are normal effects of this herb. One should consult the doctor to ask for side effects and dosage.
In addition to the methods given above, breast milk supply can also be augmented with the intake of proper food rich in calcium and protein. If these methods are not helpful to solve the problem, a lady should consult the doctor. An experienced doctor can recommend few medications that will help in better milk availability. At some places like United States, medicines like Raglan (or Metoclopramide) are sometimes prescribed by the doctors to boost the supply of breast milk.
