Common Cold - Natural remedies and tips to cure the problem!
Common Cold (or acute coryza) is a type of infection that occurs due to common cold virus. Though it is not a very serious problem, but can be very annoying sometimes and upsets the regular routine jobs of an individual. The symptoms associated with this problem are - runny nose, congestion, sore throat, headache, chills, random pains and aches, fatigue, loss of hunger, temperature and sneezing.
The intensity of the problem and symptoms can depend upon many factors such as amount of sleep, immunity levels, age, temperature changes, dust people inhale etc.
Cold is a contagious ailment and can transfer from person to person by droplets from sneezing or even touching. If infected individual touches something after sneezing into his/her hand and another individual touches same thing and then eats, the infection will be transferred to that person.
Few home remedies to cure common cold:
Lady’s finger – This vegetable is very precious in curing dry cough and throat irritation. It is high in mucilage content and works as a medicine to allay swelling, pain and annoyance. Boil 100 gm lady’s finger (chopped) in ½ liter water to prepare a decoction. The vapors coming out of this decoction should be inhaled by an individual. This procedure is to be repeated twice a day for best results.
Roots of bitter gourd – Bitter gourd (or karela) roots are also useful to treat common cold. One tbsp of root paste added to equal amount of honey should be consumed by an individual every night till the problem is not solved.
Turmeric – Turmeric (commonly known as haldi) greatly helps in treating cold and cough problems. ½ tsp haldi powder added in 30 ml hot milk should be consumed twice in a day.
Pepper and tamarind – In places like South India, tamarind (imli) and pepper soup is very popular to cure cold. Adulterate 50 to 60 mg of tamarind in 250 ml water. Boil it for sometime using 1 tbsp ghee and ½ tsp black pepper. This soup should be consumed 3 times in a day. It will instantly clear blockage in nasal passages.
Amla – Regular consumption of amla assists in preventing the symptoms of common cold. However, if the problem has already emerged, large quantities of amla will shorten the extent and relieve all the symptoms.
Garlic – A soup made out of garlic has been used as a cold remedy from ancient times. It can be prepared by boiling 4 to 5 garlic cloves in 1 cup water. Garlic has antispasmodic and antiseptic features and other therapeutic qualities. Oil present in this vegetable helps in opening up respiratory routes.
Ginger – Boil 10 gm ginger in 1 cup water. Strain the water and add ½ tsp sugar in it. Drink this water when warm. It should be taken one or two times in a day.
If conditions are not controlled within a few days of following such remedies, consult the doctor. The common cold may sometimes lead to serious ailments like bronchitis, flu etc. Specialized treatment is required in that case.
