Get rid of hiccoughs (or hiccups) with simple remedies at home!
Hiccoughs (or hiccups) are one of the most irritating unintentional reflex actions. Any kind of nuisance caused in the muscles of the diaphragm leads to irregular breathing sounds. Other contributing factors can be lung infection, hot and spicy food, stomach problems, sudden excitement, kidney disorder, overeating etc. Usually hiccoughs named as yamala, kshudra and annaja do not stay longer than 1 or 2 hours and vanish on their own. They are usually caused by gastrointestinal problems. In case, one wants to treat it soon, then try out these simple remedies at home:
The best remedy can be to drink water frequently in small intervals of time.
Gargle with warm water.
Boil 5 green cardamoms in 2 cups water. When it cools down, drink it gradually.
Suck few ice cubes.
Drink a little white vinegar.
Chop ginger into pieces and keep sucking these pieces for some time.
Mix ½ tsp clarified butter and ½ tsp mustard seeds.
Swallow the mixture.
Swallow some sugar gradually.
Eat salted curd.
Eat a little peanut butter.
Eat bread as early as possible.
Eat honey or any other sticky substance.
Minor problems of hiccup, as discussed above, can go away in some time. However, if the problems are persistent, some Ayurvedic remedies can be followed:
When the problem is acute, mayurpichcha mashi can be given with honey and ginger. It is actually the ash of scorched feathers of peacock. The mixture should be taken every 15 minutes to get rid of the problem quickly.
For continual hiccups, one can take chitrakadi vati in dosage of 200 mg three times a day. This remedy needs to be followed for 2 weeks. In addition, it is also suggested to take carminative products like fennel, black pepper, cardamom, ginger etc. to treat gastrointestinal troubles.
Somnath rasa is one of the common medicines that are prescribed for hiccoughs.
Two types of hiccups like mahati and gambhira do not get easily treated with simple drinking and eating remedies. They are caused because of serious problems and can be removed by Ayurvedic herbs or medications.
Try to get hold of breath after gulping air inside the mouth and then exhale all the air after some time.
Inhale some black pepper powder. It will help in sneezing and therefore puts an end to hiccoughs.
Hasty jerking body movements, particularly in chest and neck, help in lessening the symptoms.
For children, the best remedy is to hold a little amount of sugar under the tongues and then sip a glass of water.
Massage the area at the rear side of the neck.
Hiccups arise when the diaphragm reluctantly sucks air into lungs and throat is closed quickly resulting in sealing wind pipe. When all this happens, hiccups occur frequently.
