Swelling feet - Herbal and home remedies to cure the problem
Swollen ankles and feet is a situation that can arise out of many reasons – sprain, strain, gout or improper blood flow. Sometimes, it can lead to pain and affects normal working schedule. There may be some sort of firmness in the joints which hampers the flexibility of an individual to move. Main causes of swelling include kidney diseases, protein deficiency, sodium retention, standing continuously for a longer period of time, pregnancy, injury, oral contraceptives, low thyroids, anemia, allergies, deficiency of potassium & vitamin B etc. It is very difficult to tolerate the pain and irritation in the swollen feet. First of all, try to put the feet up while sitting. This is sometimes awkward when one is sitting at working desk in office or sitting with clients, but one can put feet up on the stool. It is also necessary for an individual to get up from time to time and stretch the feet, take a walk to avoid further build up of fluid because of gravity. Next important remedy for swelling feet is to change clothing. Wear compression stockings that will help people to alleviate the swelling in ankles or feet. These stockings actually slow down the fluid transport down to the legs from the rest of the human body.
Try to adopt some changes in lifestyle and diet. Take enough water, 8 to 10 glasses per day. The deficiency of water results in water retention. If the body senses that it is becoming dehydrated, it tries to hold water that is already present inside the body. Take regular exercises. Exercise will help in improving circulation and strengthening muscles. It will also help in losing fluids by means of sweat. Another point to take care is that whether one is taking high amount of salt. Taking lot of salt may result in retention of fluid in the body, resulting in swelling.
One of the most important remedies is to select proper footwear like shoes and socks. Footwear should be such that it makes an individual feel comfortable. They should neither be very tight, nor lose. Improper selection of shoes and socks can lead to many unhealthy situations concerning feet and ankles. Moreover, one should not wear high heels regularly. High heeled footwear is not bad to wear occasionally, but they can lead to swollen ankles when used every day. Other remedies include hot or cold water massaging, rubbing of sandalwood oil, lavender bubble bath and using some lotions or creams on the feet. One can also apply a blend of cinnamon, olive oil, lemon juice, milk and water to the swelling feet.
If these remedies are not able to provide any relief, then go for some anti- inflammatory drugs. These drugs will help people to lessen the tenderness and swelling in the feet. However, consult a doctor before buying such medicines to avoid further side effects.
