Why one needs vitamins for a healthy body? The answer to this question is here. Vitamins are the important part of a balanced diet. Without vitamins, serious illness or diseases may occur. So it’s important to have adequate amount of vitamins. One should take the food low in calories but high in nutritional value. Vitamins are found in liquid and solid forms that may be water soluble or fat soluble. It depends upon the body requirement that what vitamins should be taken by one’s body. There are a number of vitamins performing specific functions. An overview of these vitamins is discussed as below:-
Vitamin A is a powerful anti-oxidant. Vitamin helps in various metabolic reactions and immune functions. It consists of retinoic acid which is very beneficial for the body. The retinoic acid plays a great role in gene transcription, healthy skin, growth of cells and increases the vision of eyes. Due to its deficiency, blindness, skin problems and retarded growth or viral infections may occur. Vitamin B complex if different types that is vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. Vitamin B is essential to increase the rate of metabolic reactions, to enhance immune and nervous system and to promote cell growth. Deficiency of vitamin B leads to various problems like risk of cancer, anemia and urine problems.
Vitamin C is one of the essential nutrients that contain ascorbic acid mainly found in citrus fruits. Vitamin C helps to protect cells, tissues and organs. The lack of vitamin C results in diseases like cardiac attacks, cancer and scurvy. Excess of vitamin C can cause stomach pain or dehydration problems. There are many natural sources of vitamin C such as oranges, kiwi, sweet potatoes, peppers etc.
Vitamin D is of two forms: - vitamin D2 and D3. Vitamin D helps in modulating neuromuscular functions & actions of genes and reduces inflammation. Its deficiency can cause thin & brittle bones, rickets, and osteoporosis. It can be obtained from some food items like milk, flour, fish and sunlight also.
Vitamin E helps in the formation of red blood cells, prevents from cell damage and digestive system problems. People who suffer from the problems like muscle weakness, impaired vision, diabetes, cancer & heart related diseases are deficient in vitamin E. Various food items that are rich in vitamin E are fruits like mangoes, papayas, vegetables like pumpkins, potatoes and oils like wheat germ & sunflower oils. Vitamin K is a group of vitamin K1, K2, K3, K4 and K5. Vitamin K is a non toxic compound that helps to prevent from various diseases related to gallbladder, liver and maintains the bones. This vitamin helps in blood clotting and healing of wounds from serious injuries.
Vitamins are essential to perform biochemical functions. Vitamins are the substances needed by the body to work properly.
