Vitamins are those substances that are essential for the normal functioning of the human body. They are essential for growth, general well-being & vitality. They help in regulating metabolism, aid in the formation of tissues & bones and also help in converting carbohydrates & fats into energy. This article will focus on the type of vitamins and how they are important for the human body. There are two broad categories in which all the vitamins are divided – fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins.
Importance of fat soluble vitamins in the human body
Vitamins A, D, E & K are collectively known as fat soluble vitamins. When they get absorbed in the body, they are passed to the liver where they are accumulated for future use.
Vitamin A (or Beta Carotene) – This vitamin is essential for repair and growth of body tissues, maintaining soft & smooth skin, protecting the eyesight, shielding against air pollutants, and teeth and bone formation. A medical research finds that a diet rich in Vitamin A can also lessen the threat of lung cancer and some oral cancers.
Vitamin D – This vitamin helps in the process of absorption, sustains a steady nervous system & heart function, and is also needed for teeth & bone formation.
Vitamin E – It is a main anti-oxidant nutrient which delivers the oxygen to the blood, from where the blood is supplied to the other organs including heart. This vitamin also helps in strengthening the capillary walls, assists in carrying nourishment to cells and prevents the RBCs from caustic poisons.
Vitamin K – This vitamin is necessary for the process of blood clotting so that one does not lose much amount of the blood when injured.
Importance of water soluble vitamins in the human body
The main water soluble vitamins include vitamin B complex and vitamin C. They are stored in the human body for a very short period of time and after that they are excreted through the kidneys.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) – This vitamin plays an important role in the process of carbohydrate digestion. It also aids in the normal functioning of the heart, muscles, appetite, and nervous system and encourages good muscle tone.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - This vitamin is necessary for intracellular metabolism. It is used to promote general well-being of an individual. Its deficiency may lead to chapped lips and painful tongue.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) – This vitamin aids in the breakdown of amino acids, formation of antibodies, carbohydrate metabolism and maintaining nervous system.
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) - This vitamin is necessary for manufacturing genetic material in the cells. It is also helpful in the production of erythrocytes. Its deficiency can lead to pernicious anemia.
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) – This vitamin is essential for maintaining healthy teeth, gums, bones, blood vessels and ligaments.
