Anjali Mudra (Salutation Seal)
This Mudra or posture although is a very simple form of yogic postures but yet it has a great significance and potential. And opens you up into spiritual pathway by daily practice. In Sanskrit Mudra means “Seal or sign” not meaning just the folding of hands but it is a sacred gesture symbolizing the inner state of your body, mind and soul. Anjali as per our tradition means “offerings”, “namskara or namaste”.
Salutation is essence of yogic through which one sees Divine within all the creations. This is used as a posture of composure, returning to ones heart, or even when initiating or completing anything. As we bring our hands together for this posture at the center of our chest we are literally connecting the right and left hemispheres of our brain together. So this is a process of unification. From the yogic point of view of our body the energetic or spiritual heart is visualized as a lotus at the center of the chest. Therefore Anjali Mudra nourishes the lotus heart with awareness gently opening it up to the light of spirituality and tranquility.
So in order to begin with for this asana one must sit comfortably in Sukhasana or the Easy pose. Elongating the spine out of the pelvis and extend back your neck by dropping your chin slightly inwards. Now with open palms, slowly draw your hands at the center of your chest as if gathering all resources into your heart. Repeat this movement several times. Now try separating out your hands slowly they wont separate out. Now gently touch your sternum. Broadening your shoulder blades spread out your chest to open it from the inside to outside. Stay in this position for a while.
Anjali Mudra thus can even be used in various asanas as Sun Salutation, and many other asanas in a way to come back and maintain your center. When your hands are folded together overhead in Virabhadrasana or the Warrior or the tree pose it still is the Anjali Mudra.
